RIO LINDA, Sacramento County — Sacramento County is studying a proposed 1.25-mile extension of the Sacramento Northern Bikeway along a former railroad corridor north of Elverta Road.
The SacDOT project listing says the study would look at extending the existing roughly 10-mile pedestrian and bicycle route toward the Placer County line through the Rio Linda–Elverta area.
What would the extension include?
Preliminary work is expected to evaluate road crossings, creek crossings, connections from nearby neighborhoods, landscaping, accessibility and overall trail design. The county lists data collection, traffic and safety analysis, conceptual engineering, public engagement and environmental review among the study tasks.
Is this trail already open?
No new segment should be assumed open because it appears in a preconstruction project description. The county is describing preliminary analysis, not a finished bike path. Formal construction will require later funding, design and applicable approvals.
People using the existing trail should follow posted routes, obey bicycle and pedestrian rules at road crossings and avoid entering railroad, utility or other off-limits corridors.
Residents can follow Sacramento County’s transportation project website for public meetings, plan revisions and future capital funding decisions.
